Solar Project

It is crucial for businesses and ventures that rely on significant usage of energy to think of a financially appropriate choice of resident energy. Kiwoko Hospital, a rural community hospital in Nakaseke district, is one of such entities looking to make an appropriate choice. The major aim of the hospital management is to cut energy costs with the overall goal of releasing more funds from energy savings for investment in direct patient care.

Since inception, the hospital has been running on diesel generators, and hydropower from a national grid. In June 2017, Kiwoko Hospital procured and installed the first batch of solar panels at its premises.

A total of 10 solar panels (20 by September 2017) and one inverter were put into activity generating an average of 390kWh per month with the highest monthly collection being 554 kWh in October and the lowest at 159kWh in June, the installation month. This installation led to an actual cut in electricity bill payments of UGX 1,982,893, equating to a total savings of approximately 396.4 in 2017 with an effective six-months solar power use. In 2018, with a solar power usage for the twelve months and an addition of one extra inverter and a further 20 panels, the average monthly power collection shot up to 983kWh.

The bill cuts went to UGX 8,575,934 - an annual total savings of approximately 1,713. The years 2019 and 2020 with total solar power yields of 10779 kWh and 11055kWh respectively, led to electricity bill cuts of UGX 8,267,110 and UGX 8,478,976, equaling annual power savings of 1,648 and 1,691. Key to note is the addition of 32 more solar panels and a third inverter in December 2020, too late to have a significant bill cut for the same year. This is expected to be significant for the year 2021. By January 2021, the hospital had saved a total of 29,781,840 off electricity bills.

Health Training Institute Girls' Hostel

To create a suitable learning environment, KH management has proposed construction of a hostel for female students. As quoted by the A. K. Build Aiders Ltd, construction of the girls’ hostel will cost a total of Ugx 931,305,503. The hospital has been able to erect a substructure and the ground floor slab at a cost of Ugx 105,634,667 plus Ugx 10,000,000 for preliminary surveys and consultation hence spending a total of Ugx 115,634,667.

On completion, the girls’ hostel will consist of two floors namely, the ground floor and the first floor. Each floor will have 14 rooms hence a total of 28 rooms each room accommodating 4 students and hence a total of 112 students. The building will have a total of 16 bathrooms, and 8 toilets, 8 and 4, respectively on each floor. To ease funding, the management has suggested a 2-phase construction strategy where each floor will cost Ugx 407,835,418 which totals up to Ugx 815,670,836 (the funding gap). Kiwoko Hospital Farm

The hospital has 72 acres of farmland located in Kattabalalo village, Nakaseke district. Of the 72 acres, 20 have been cultivated with pine trees to cater for future time demand for timber by the hospital, generate income as well as offset the hospital’s carbon dioxide (CO2) production in the era of climate change.

KH management is looking forward to introducing livestock and crops on the farm and any correspondences should be directed to the business manager by

Craft Shop

The hospital oversees a craft shop whose products are made by HIV-positive women majorly widows and single mothers that attend the HIV clinic at Kiwoko. The craft producers are skilled for production of high-quality commercial crafts and related products.

The income generated from this venture supports women living with HIV in terms of providing a balanced meal for their families, which is highly desired during ARV medication, providing school fees for their children among other needs. Some of the products made include: Christmas decorations (sisal angels, banana angels, maize angels, straw angels, Christmas cards), necklaces, ear rings, bags, etc. Place an order by emailing:visitors@kiwokohospital.org
